10 Colouring Techniques Every Beginner Should Know

Colouring isn’t just for kids — it’s a relaxing, creative hobby that anyone can enjoy. Whether you’re filling in a kids’ colouring page, trying mindful colouring for yourself, or helping young artists gain confidence, a few simple techniques can make a huge difference.

The best part? You don’t need fancy tools or formal training — just a handful of pencils, crayons, or markers and these easy beginner-friendly techniques.

1. Light to Dark Layering

Start lightly and build colour gradually. Begin with soft pressure and layer to deepen shades.

Benefits: smoother results, better control, fewer streaks.

2. Smooth Shading

Shading adds depth and dimension.

  • Press lightly on one side

  • Increase pressure gradually

Perfect for: skies, fruits, clothing, and backgrounds.

3. Blending Colours Together

Blend colours for smooth transitions instead of abrupt stops.

  • Overlap two colours

  • Use small circular motions

  • Layer a lighter pencil over both

Example: yellow + orange for sunsets, blue + green for water.

4. Circular Colouring (No Scribble Marks!)

Use tiny circular motions to fill spaces evenly.

  • Reduces streaks

  • Produces polished finish

5. Burnishing for Bold Colour

After layering, press firmly with a light pencil (or white pencil) to create rich, vibrant colour.

  • Blends layers together

  • Fills paper texture

  • Glossy, bold look

6. Highlighting

Leave areas white or very light to show where light hits.

  • Add life and realism

  • Tiny highlights on eyes, fruit, glass, or metal

7. Cross-Hatching for Texture

Create shadows or textures using cross-hatching: light lines in one direction, then opposite.

  • Fabric, fur, wood grain

  • Darker shadows

8. Outlining for Definition

Trace edges with a slightly darker shade to make shapes and characters stand out.

9. Mixing Mediums

Combine tools like:

  • Crayons + pencils

  • Markers + pencils

  • Gel pens or glitter pens

10. Adding Patterns & Details

Decorate flat spaces with: dots, stripes, stars, swirls, tiny flowers.

  • Makes pages personal and creative
