Celebrate Aqiqah With "Welcome Little One" Handprint Garland

Creating a handprint garland is a wonderful way to celebrate a new baby's arrival with messages of love and blessings. Here's how to make this special keepsake with children aged 3–10.

What You'll Need

  • Coloured paper (any shades you like)
  • Scissors
  • Markers or coloured pens
  • String or ribbon
  • Tape or glue stick

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Trace the Handprints

Ask each child to place their hand flat on a sheet of coloured paper. Using a marker, carefully trace around their hand—fingers spread wide. Make sure to trace all the way around, including the wrist area. Repeat for each child who wants to participate.

Step 2: Cut Out the Handprints

Carefully cut out each handprint along the traced line. Younger children (ages 3–5) may need help with scissors, so consider cutting these yourself or supervising closely. Older children (ages 6–10) can usually manage this step independently.

Step 3: Write Kind Wishes

On the palm of each handprint, write a special message or blessing for the baby. Keep messages short and simple so they're easy to read. Here are some ideas:

  • "May you be happy"
  • "May you grow strong and kind"
  • "Wishing you love and laughter"
  • "May you be brave and bold"
  • "Sending you joy"

Let older children write their own messages if they'd like—their words will make the garland even more personal.

Step 4: Add Decorations

Using markers, decorate each handprint with drawings. Try adding stars, moons, hearts, flowers, or any designs the children enjoy. This is a chance for creativity, so encourage them to make each handprint unique and colourful.

Step 5: String It Together

Lay all the handprints out in a line. Decide on the order—you might arrange them by colour, by child's age, or randomly. Using a hole punch or by carefully making a small hole with scissors, create a hole near the wrist area of each handprint. Thread string or ribbon through the holes, tying knots between each handprint to keep them spaced apart and secure.

Step 6: Display Your Garland

Hang the garland in the baby's nursery, across a doorway, or in a special celebration space. It's a beautiful decoration that also serves as a heartfelt keepsake.

Why This Activity Is Special

This handprint garland captures a moment in time—the actual size of each child's hand at this age. Years later, families treasure these keepsakes as a reminder of who was there to welcome the new arrival. The personal messages and decorations make it a one-of-a-kind gift filled with love and blessings for the baby's future.
