Share
Fanous are a beloved part of Ramadan traditions, especially in places like Egypt. They represent light, joy, and celebration. This easy paper version lets you recreate that festive feeling at home with simple supplies and minimal effort, perfectly safe for small hands!
What You’ll Need
Coloured paper
Scissors
Ruler
Glue or stapler
Extra strip of paper (for handle)
LED tea light (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Fold Your Paper for a Ramadan Lantern
Fold a sheet of coloured paper in half vertical.
Step 2: Cut Slits Carefully for Paper Lantern Design
Starting from the folded edge, cut straight lines toward the open edge — stopping about 1 inch before the top so the paper stays intact.
Step 3: Unfold Your Paper Lantern
Open the paper back up and flatten it gently.
Step 4: Form the Paper Lantern
Roll the paper into a tube shape so the slits run vertically. Glue or staple the edges together.
Step 5: Add a Handle
Attach a strip of paper across the top to create a handle.
Step 6: Add a Soft Glow (Optional)
Place an LED tea light inside for a magical lantern effect. (Always use LED for safety.)
Creative Idea: Glue colourful tissue paper behind the slits for a stained-glass appearance.
This paper lantern adds depth and charm to your Ramadan decorations. Hang several at different heights, place them on your iftar table, or let children proudly display their creations. It’s a simple craft with beautiful meaning — bringing light into your home during a special time of year.
