How to Make Accordion Paper Lanterns for Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, is one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar. It's a time for reflection, prayer, and celebration with loved ones. Creating decorations together is a wonderful way to involve children and build excitement for the occasion. Accordion paper lanterns are a perfect craft project for kids aged 8–11—they're simple to make, require just a few materials, and look absolutely stunning when lit or displayed.

What You'll Need

  • Coloured paper or cardstock (gold, silver, deep blues, and jewel tones work beautifully)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Ruler (optional, but helpful)
  • Markers or crayons for decoration
  • String or ribbon (for hanging)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Fold Your Paper
Take a sheet of coloured paper and fold it in half lengthwise. This creates a long rectangle.

Step 2: Create the Accordion Folds
Starting from the folded edge, make thin accordion-style folds across the width of the paper. Fold, then flip and fold again, creating a zigzag pattern. Aim for folds about 1–2 cm wide. This takes a bit of patience, but kids often enjoy the repetitive motion.

Step 3: Unfold Carefully
Gently unfold your paper. You'll see a beautiful accordion pattern running across it.

Step 4: Form the Lantern Shape
Bring the two short ends of the paper together and glue or tape them to create a cylinder. The accordion folds will naturally curve outward, giving your lantern its distinctive shape.

Step 5: Add a Handle (Optional)
Cut a thin strip from contrasting paper and glue it to the inside top edges of the lantern to create a hanging handle.

Step 6: Decorate
Use markers, stickers, or additional paper shapes to add patterns, stars, or meaningful symbols. This is where kids can really express their creativity.

Display and Enjoy

Hang your lanterns around your home, in windows, or from the ceiling. If you're using battery-operated fairy lights or LED candles inside (with adult supervision), they'll glow beautifully and create a warm, festive atmosphere perfect for Laylat al-Qadr celebrations.

This craft is not only fun but also a meaningful way to connect children with the spirit of the occasion while developing their fine motor skills and creativity.
