How to Make Crescent Moon and Star Mobiles for Eid al-Adha
Share
Eid al-Adha is a wonderful time to bring festive spirit into your home, and handmade decorations add a personal touch that shop-bought alternatives simply can't match. Crescent moon and star mobiles are classic Eid decorations that work beautifully in bedrooms, living spaces, or even as centrepieces for celebrations. Here's how to create your own.
What You'll Need
- Cardstock or craft paper in silver, gold, and white
- Scissors or a craft knife
- String or fishing line
- A wooden dowel or thin branch
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- Optional: glitter, markers, or paint for decoration
- Hole punch
Step 1: Cut Your Shapes
Start by drawing crescent moon and star templates on your cardstock. Crescent moons work best when they're roughly 10–15cm across, while stars can vary from 5–12cm depending on your preference. Cut out multiple shapes—aim for at least 5–7 moons and 10–15 stars to create visual balance. If you're not confident freehand, print templates online and trace them onto your cardstock.
Step 2: Add Decorative Details
This is where your mobile comes to life. Use markers to add patterns, dots, or lines to your shapes. Alternatively, apply glitter glue for a shimmering effect, or paint them with metallic colours. Let any wet materials dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Punch Holes and Attach String
Using a hole punch, create a small hole near the top of each shape. Cut lengths of string or fishing line—varying the lengths between 15cm and 40cm creates a more dynamic, visually interesting mobile. Tie each string securely to its shape with a knot.
Step 4: Assemble Your Mobile
Lay your dowel or branch horizontally. Tie your strings to the dowel at different points, spacing them evenly. Start with the longest strings at the outer edges and work towards shorter strings in the middle. This helps balance the mobile and prevents it from tilting to one side.
Step 5: Test and Adjust
Hold the mobile by its centre point and check that it hangs evenly. If one side dips lower, move a string slightly along the dowel or adjust the weight distribution by adding or removing shapes. Once balanced, tie a final string to the top of the dowel for hanging.
Display and Enjoy
Hang your mobile in a window where light can catch the metallic finishes, or position it above a table as a focal point. The gentle movement of the shapes creates a calming, festive atmosphere perfect for Eid celebrations.
Making these mobiles is also a lovely activity to do with children, turning craft time into a meaningful part of your Eid preparations.
