How to Make Paper Durga Crowns for Kids
Share
Durga Puja is a vibrant celebration of strength, courage, and creativity—and what better way to get children involved than by crafting their own paper crowns inspired by the goddess Durga? This fun, hands-on project is perfect for kids aged 8–11 and requires just a few basic materials you likely have at home.
What You'll Need
- Coloured paper or cardstock (gold, red, orange, and purple work beautifully)
- Scissors
- Glue stick or craft glue
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Decorative materials: sequins, glitter, stickers, or hand-drawn patterns
- Tape (optional, for securing the band)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Create the Crown Band
Cut a strip of cardstock about 5 cm wide and long enough to wrap around your child's head with a 2 cm overlap. This forms the base of the crown.
Step 2: Design the Crown Points
Cut triangular or pointed shapes from your coloured paper—these will be the distinctive peaks of the crown. Aim for 5–7 points, each about 10–12 cm tall. Let your child draw or decorate these pieces before attaching them.
Step 3: Assemble the Crown
Glue the pointed pieces to the inside edge of the band, spacing them evenly around the circle. Make sure they stand upright and are secure.
Step 4: Add Decorative Details
This is where creativity shines! Your child can add sequins, glitter, stickers, or hand-drawn designs to the points and band. Gold and jewel tones look especially regal.
Step 5: Secure the Band
Once the glue is dry, wrap the crown around your child's head and secure the overlap with tape or a small glue dot. Adjust for comfort.
Tips for Success
- Pre-cut the band and points if your child is younger or less confident with scissors.
- Use a template: draw the crown shape on paper first, then trace it onto cardstock for consistency.
- Encourage your child to mix colours and patterns—there's no "right" way to decorate.
- Let glue dry completely between steps to prevent pieces from shifting.
- Make it a group activity: kids can create crowns together and wear them during Durga Puja celebrations.
These paper crowns are a wonderful way to celebrate the festival while developing fine motor skills and artistic confidence. Your child will be proud to wear their handmade creation!
