How to Make Paper Poppy Badges for Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is a meaningful occasion to teach children about history and honour, and making paper poppy badges is a wonderful craft activity that brings the tradition to life. This simple project is perfect for children aged 4–7 and requires just a few basic materials you likely have at home.

What You'll Need

  • Red and green paper or card
  • Black marker or pen
  • Scissors (child-safe if possible)
  • Glue stick or craft glue
  • A safety pin or badge pin
  • Optional: black tissue paper, sequins, or paint for extra detail

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the Petals
Cut five circles from red paper, each about 5cm in diameter. These will form the poppy petals. If your child is old enough, let them help with cutting—it's great for developing scissor skills.

Step 2: Create the Centre
Cut a small circle from black paper or card, roughly 2cm across. This is the poppy's centre. If you have black tissue paper, crumple it slightly for a more textured, realistic look.

Step 3: Assemble the Flower
Arrange the five red circles in a flower shape on a flat surface. Glue them down, overlapping slightly at the centre. Then glue the black circle in the middle to hold everything together.

Step 4: Add the Stem and Leaf
Cut a thin strip of green paper for the stem and a small leaf shape. Glue these to the back of your poppy flower.

Step 5: Attach the Pin
Glue or tape a safety pin to the back of the badge. Make sure it's secure before your child wears it.

Tips for Success

  • Pre-cut the circles yourself if your child is very young—it saves frustration and keeps the focus on assembly and creativity.
  • Use a glue stick for younger children; it's less messy than liquid glue.
  • Let the glue dry completely before pinning the badge on clothing.
  • Encourage your child to decorate their poppy with markers or sequins to make it unique.
  • Make several badges so your child can share them with friends or family.

This craft is not only fun but also a gentle way to introduce children to the significance of Remembrance Sunday. Wearing their handmade poppy badge gives them a sense of pride and participation in a cherished tradition.
