How To Make Your Own Palm Crosses For Palm Sunday

Palm crosses are a special tradition for Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. They are small crosses made from palms that remind us of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the cross he would later be crucified on. Making a palm cross is a fun, hands-on way for children to celebrate Easter, learn about the story, and create a meaningful decoration they can keep or give to someone they love

You will need:

  • Green paper or card (construction paper works well)

  • Scissors

  • Glue stick or tape

  • Pen or pencil (optional, for tracing)

Steps

  1. Cut two strips of paper — one slightly longer than the other. For example, 15 cm × 2 cm for the long strip, 12 cm × 2 cm for the short strip. Thicker is sturdier so makes it more rigid whereas thinner makes it more dainty and more palm like.
  2. Form a cross by placing the short strip across the longer strip, roughly one-third from the top.
  3. Glue or tape the strips together where they overlap to hold the cross shape.
  4. Cut fringe along the ends of both strips to resemble palm leaves. Trace a faint line across the center of both strips to give yourself a guide for space that will stay connected. Make small, even cuts along the edges without touching the line.
  5. Optional: Fold or curl the fringes slightly to add dimension or trim the straight edges into soft curves to give a palm leave shape
  6. Decorate or write a message on the cross, if desired
  7. Display or keep the palm cross as part of Easter decorations.

For younger kids Pre-cut the strips for them to make the assembly easier and focus on gluing and simple fringe cutting rather than perfect measurements.

Once your palm cross is finished, you can display it at home, give it to someone special, or use it as part of your Easter decorations. If theyre dainty enough they make a cute mobile to sway in the breeze.

Making it is not only fun but also a way to remember the story of Palm Sunday and celebrate the meaning of Easter together. Every cross your child creates is a little reminder of love, faith, and the joy of the season. Keep the joy going with our instant download Easter Crafts.
