How To Make Your Own St Brigid's Cross

St. Brigid's Cross is a traditional Irish symbol that is said to protect the home from harm. Making your own St. Brigid's Cross is not only a fun and creative activity, but it also brings a sense of tradition and protection to your living space. Follow these simple steps to make your very own St. Brigid's Cross in paper

You Will Need:

Paper, Scissors, pencil, ruler, pen.

Step 1: Cut your paper into 4 strips of equal width.

Step 2: Fold the strips in half

Step 3: Hold the first strip so the fold is at the top and  the second strip horizontally with the fold on the left.

Step 4: Close the second strip around the first so it is sandwiched between the fold.

Step 5: Repeat this for the next strip and the next so you have a square shape in the centre.

Step 6: Weave the top of the last strip through the fold of the first to secure the square.

Step 7: Decorate your cross! You can write manifestations, draw celtic symbols, or just leave it blank! It's totally up to you.

Alternatively you can use reeds or rushes which is the traditional craft supplies. It is also possible to use pipe cleaners instead for this.

What You'll Need:

16 reeds or rushes (or 20 pipe cleaners), Scissors, Ribbon or string

Step 1: Prepare the Reeds

Start by soaking the reeds in water for about 30 minutes to make them more pliable. This will make it easier to weave them together.

Step 2: Create the Base

Take 4 reeds and form a square shape, crossing them in the middle. Secure the ends with a piece of ribbon or string.

Step 3: Weave the Cross

Take 4 more reeds and weave them over and under the base reeds, creating a cross shape. Secure the ends with more ribbon or string.

Step 4: Continue Weaving

Repeat the weaving process with the remaining reeds, alternating the direction each time to create a woven pattern. Make sure to secure the ends as you go.

Step 5: Finish the Cross

Once you have used all 16 reeds, trim any excess and secure the ends with a final piece of ribbon or string. Your St. Brigid's Cross is now complete!

Follow the same steps with pipe cleaners but you can secure the ends with other pipe cleaners instead of string.

Hang your St. Brigid's Cross in a prominent place in your home to bring protection and blessings to your space. You can also give it as a thoughtful gift to friends and family to share the tradition and symbolism of this ancient Irish symbol.

Creating your own St. Brigid's Cross is a wonderful way to connect with Irish heritage and bring a sense of peace and protection to your home. Embrace the tradition and craft your own St. Brigid's Cross today!
