Tartan Paper Weaving: A Fun Scottish Craft for Burns Night
Share
Burns Night celebrates the life and poetry of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet. It's a wonderful time to explore Scottish culture with your family—and what better way than with a colourful craft project? This tartan paper weaving activity is perfect for children aged 5–12 and requires just a few simple materials you probably have at home.
What You'll Need
- Coloured paper in red, green, blue, and black
- Scissors
- Glue stick or craft glue
- Cardstock or thick paper for mounting
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cut Your Paper Strips
Start by cutting your coloured paper into long, even strips. Aim for strips about 2–3 cm wide. You'll need roughly 8–10 strips in each colour. Don't worry if they're not perfectly straight—part of the charm is the handmade feel!
Step 2: Create Your Base
Lay half of your strips horizontally on a flat surface, spacing them about 1 cm apart. These are your foundation strips. This is where the weaving magic begins.
Step 3: Start Weaving
Now take your remaining strips and weave them vertically over and under the horizontal strips, alternating as you go. The first vertical strip goes over the first horizontal strip, then under the second, then over the third, and so on. The next vertical strip does the opposite—under, over, under. Keep going until all your strips are woven together and you've created a beautiful tartan pattern.
Step 4: Secure Your Weaving
Once you're happy with your pattern, carefully glue down all the strip ends. A glue stick works well for this. Let it dry completely before moving on.
Step 5: Mount Your Masterpiece
Glue your finished weaving onto a piece of cardstock to give it a neat, polished look and make it sturdier.
What Can You Make?
Your tartan weaving is now ready to become something special. Turn it into a colourful placemat for your Burns Night supper, a bookmark to tuck into a poetry book, or frame it as a piece of Scottish-inspired wall art. You could even make several and create a whole collection!
Why Tartan Matters
Tartan is one of Scotland's most recognisable symbols. The distinctive criss-cross patterns have been part of Scottish culture for centuries, and different tartans are associated with different clans and regions. By creating your own tartan design, you're connecting with a rich part of Scottish heritage—something Robert Burns himself would have known well. This craft helps children understand that Scotland has a unique and colourful identity, making Burns Night celebrations even more meaningful.
So gather your paper, settle in with your little ones, and create some tartan magic this Burns Night!
